What Are Feelings For?
Cal Banyan, creator of 5-PATH® Hypnotherapy, wrote a deeply insightful book called The Secret Language of Feelings.
Having trained extensively with Cal in the USA over many years, I’ve gained a profound appreciation for the important role our feelings play in our emotional wellbeing -- and I’d like to share a little of that understanding with you here.
Are feelings “good” or “bad”?
In my view, all feelings are useful.
Or at least, they are meant to be.
Our feelings act as an internal guidance system, constantly helping us recognise whether our emotional needs are being met — or not being met.
When uncomfortable feelings are ignored, suppressed or pushed away, they don’t simply disappear.
Instead, they often begin expressing themselves in other ways.
How we learn emotional patterns
From childhood onwards, most of us absorb unconscious messages about emotions and how “acceptable” they are within our family environment.
Some people learn:
- not to cry
- not to show anger
- to stay strong
- to keep everyone else happy
- or to avoid conflict at all costs
Over time, these emotional coping patterns can become automatic.
Many people continue reacting in the same ways for decades without ever questioning whether those responses are truly healthy or helpful.
The problem with emotional avoidance
When difficult feelings become overwhelming, many people look for ways to escape or distract themselves.
This might include:
- overworking
- emotional eating
- alcohol
- compulsive behaviours
- excessive screen time
- fantasy or avoidance
These distractions may provide temporary relief, but they rarely resolve the underlying emotional issue.
Sooner or later, the feelings usually return.
Suppressed emotions create pressure
Trying to “keep it together” all the time can place enormous pressure on the mind and body.
Anxiety, stress, panic, exhaustion and emotional overwhelm are often signs that important feelings have been ignored for too long.
That’s why acknowledging our feelings -- rather than fighting them — is so important.
You Need an Action Plan
Understanding feelings is one thing.
Learning how to respond to them in a healthier way is another.
A simple 3-step process can help:
Identify the feeling
What are you actually feeling?
- Anxiety?
- Anger?
- Fear?
- Sadness?
- Frustration?
Giving a feeling a name reduces confusion and creates clarity.
Identify the cause
What triggered the feeling?
For example:
- “I’ve been criticised.”
- “I feel rejected.”
- “I’m frightened about the future.”
- “I’ve experienced a loss.”
Once the cause becomes clear, the feeling usually begins making much more sense.
Take positive action
Ask yourself:
“What would help me respond to this situation in a healthier and more supportive way?”
Sometimes the answer involves:
- asking for help
- setting boundaries
- resting
- grieving
- learning a new skill
- making a difficult decision
- or simply acknowledging what you truly feel
Lights… Camera… Action!
My years in the film industry taught me something surprisingly useful about emotional healing.
In filmmaking, the Director calls:
“Lights… Camera… Action!”
Emotional healing works in a similar way.
First, you shine a light on the problem.
Then you focus clearly on what’s causing it.
And finally, you take constructive action.
Not by denying your feelings.
Not by exaggerating them.
But by understanding them and responding appropriately.
